There is a
coincidence in a large part of the Argentine people that Diego Armando
Maradona, one of the great icons of the country, could die at any moment due to
his increasingly complicated state of health and yet it was clear that no one
was sufficiently prepared for a news that came when it seemed that he was just
recovering.
Several times
Maradona was close to death (the most shocking happened in late 2000 in
Uruguay, when he was miraculously saved and welcomed in Cuba by former
President Fidel Castro, perhaps the only person Maradona truly admired), that
the Argentines got used to receiving the news of his death as fake, but this
time it was confirmed and a crowd took the streets to express their immense sorrowsinging
his name like in a stadiumand at 10 pm the people applauded moved and for a
minute in tribute to the super star.
The last days of
Maradona could not avoid the controversies around his health between
professionals with mixed opinions and pulls between his relatives and between
them and his environment (lawyer and personal doctor) and even between
ex-partners out of jealousy.
At the beginning
of 2020, he had been excited about the technical direction of Gimnasia y
Esgrima La Plata in the highest category of Argentine football, but his health
did not allow him to continue at work, he had gone from that drug addiction to
another to alcohol, plus dilated cardiomyopathy (his heart was twice its
natural size) and other chronic problems. It was difficult for him to walk (he
did it with crutches or supported by assistants) and he spoke babbling. He then
left his daily task in Gymnastics (which was inexorably heading down to Second
Division) in the hands of his collaborators Sebastián Méndez and Adrián
González, with his supervision from his residence in Estancia Chica.
At the beginning
of October, everything seemed to improve around him. His closest people (the
doctor Leopoldo Luque and his lawyer and representative, MatíasMorla)
maintained that he had lost weight, that he was recovering from his knee
problems doing exercises, and he himself declared that he was
"happy." The announced return of Argentine football, after seven
months of quarantine, seemed to generate a particular illusion and a sign was
that the new National Cup would begin precisely on Friday, October 30, the day
of his sixtieth birthday, and relegation to Second Division was suspended (for
what which, Gymnastics was saved).
However,
everything collapsed like a house of cards. That same day of his birthday, the
president of the AFA, Claudio Tapia and the president of the Football League,
Marcelo Tinelli, wanted to get political gain by appearing in a photo with him
and made him go to the Gymnastics field to give him a commemorative plate and
hugging him when his state of health was delicate and it was not advisable to
leave his house (in fact, he did not even stay for the game), and he especially
felt the absence of his deceased parents (Diego and Dalma), so much so that he
wore a face maskwith a photo of him as a young man, accompanied by them.
It was also
learned that there was not so much tranquility in his house and on his birthday
the confrontation between his three daughters (Dalma, Giannina and Jana -his
son Diego lives in Italy-) with those who accompanied him on a day-to-day
basis, and between the daughters and the former partner and mother of her young
child Diego Fernando, Verónica Ojeda. "I tell everyone that I am not going
to leave anything to you, that I am going to donate everything I generated in
my life," he shouted at them at one point, about the 500 million dollars
he would have, according to the website "Celebrity Net Worth ”. To make
matters worse, he had had tough legal exchanges with his first wife, Claudia
Villafañe, for issues related to the imminent Netflix series about his life,
“SueñoBendito”.
Days later, the
news impacted that he had been admitted to a clinic to be operated on for a
subdural hematoma that did not seem to be serious, although another controversy
broke out there: although everyone agreed that his departure should not be
hurried and that he was a patient "very difficult to handle, used to doing
his will," under his pressure, his personal doctor agreed that on November
11 he would leave the clinic when his doctor for many years, the psychiatrist
Alfredo Cahe, also maintained otherwise.
They fitted him
up, a house in the exclusive neighborhood of Nordelta, on the outskirts of
Buenos Aires, where again, he seemed to be recovering, until on Wednesday the
25th at 12 noon, when his psychologist Carlos Díaz came to his room as a
routine and his psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, discovered that he was lying,
lifeless. The ambulance arrived eleven minutes after that and they tried to
revive him with CPR.
Later, the news
that nobody wanted to hear and that arrived seconds later to the whole world,
the TV channels and radios transmitting almost in unison, the on-camera cries
of their former colleagues in the different programs, and absolute chaos at a
wake, which ended up in the Government House in Buenos Aires, with a crowd that
was estimated at one million people, arriving from all parts of the country and
in the middle of the quarantine, and with disputes between the Government that
wanted to extend the hours and the family, which did not accept; and then about
who is responsible for the police repression of those who made the immense line
to say his last goodbye and could not enter, until, finally, when the sun was
setting, they were able to remove the coffin from the side of the building, to
take it to a private cemetery where he was buried in an intimate ceremony, near
his beloved parents, perhaps seeking, finally, the peace that he didn’t have in
life.
