Undoubtedly Inter’s classification to play the final of the Champions League vs Bayern Munich in Madrid, is one of the most moving facts of the World football in the last times, not only because they eliminated the team considered the best of the planet, the Barcelona, but because they do not get the precious trophy since 1965.
However, the particular way of having lost only by one goal in the Camp Nou, after having won 3-1 in the starting match, in Milan, only trying to defend themselves, not even daring to shot the rival goal, due to the only wish to obtain the looked for objective, reopens an ethical debate on whether it is legitimate to win in that way.
It is clear that the Inter adjusts to the football rule and therefore, if their coach, the Portuguese José Mourinho, decides to put all his team in defensive position, he may do it. If he gets the desired objective it will be legal, and in fact, nobody discusses whether the Inter ought or not to present the next May 22 in the stadium Santiago Bernabeu to play the final vs Bayern.
The matter comes through the conception of what originally the football is as a sport. It is a game? A science? An art? It is possible that everyone has an opinion in this respect, what transforms this activity, not by chance, in one of the richest that exists for the collective use. Many will say that it may have an aspect of each thing but that “sport is something different from all the rest and that what imports there is simply to impose.
Everything is respectable but the sport has to have a moral side. And the only manner to maintain it is to respect the essence of the game. The essence indicates always that the football is played originally to try to mark goals to the adversary and from the moment that a ticket is collected or that television rights are sold and money is received for the spectacle, there is a commitment a priori to offer the best possible and not only an argument as to win in any manner.
When one of the team renounces to play and dedicates only to defend itself, though in a certain point they are sincere with the spectator recognizing the inferiority regarding the rival, it also gives us a clear message against the original game ethic even it does not confront the rule and says us to abandon all the expectative to see a spectacle, at least on their behalf. If in any case the rival gets to over pass the defensive fencing (and defensive only) that will be used, then only in that way it will be possible to enjoy something worth while.
Even so, the Inter has enormous defensive solidity shown in front of Barcelona in the Camp Nou, with big cracks in all the positions that are terribly difficult to overpass, midfielders with much experience, a great goalkeeper that is going through an exceptional moment, as the Brazilian Julio Cesar, but also a remarkable duple of attack, composed by the Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o and especially the Argentine Diego Milito.
Did the Inter classify only by itself? We do not believe it, neither due to the undoubted orientation of the great tactic of the coach, Mourinho, that is not casual that he obtains this objective after 45 years of drought of the Italians.. Also this obeys the low moment of some players of the Barcelona (Touré, Ibrahimovic, Keita), a fundamental absence at the final of the plays, as Andrés Iniesta, and specially an amazing Lionel Messi, far from his very high level not very long ago, less than a month, he seems to suffer due to a personal reason, not footballistic.
With all these problems, and with a strong rendering but not a the level of the last season, ( that now makes dangerous also a league that seemed won after having won clearly in the Bernabeu over the Real Madrid), this Barcelona could not reach the level necessary to dare a brave team as the Inter, as well as a similar obstacle, and perhaps even harder they could resolve it in that semi final vs the Chelsea in London, though the glorious shot by Iniesta was in the last play.
That Barcelona had not the sparkle necessary to break two strong lines and a great goalkeeper as it occurred in front of the Inter, even with one player less for many minutes, because the Catalonians need too much Messi, Xavi and Iniesta for this final touch, and they neither obtained with Ibrahimovic, an implacable goaler as they had with Eto’o who played for the confronting team.
Everything indicates that the clue of the series was more in Milan than in Barcelona. Inter had an advantage playing at great level and then they defended it in their way, questionable or not, as they could in the Camp Nou, availing their fortitude and deepening he rivals weakness. It will remain to think whether it is or not reasonable an Inter as that of Camp Nou being possible another, as that of San Siro.
Surely, returning to the ethical debate, today minimized by many as it seems that everything is valid just to obtain the temporary sport success the Inter fans are not interested in the debate. Those of Barcelona will be sad trusting to revert this panorama winning the league vs Real Madrid.
But we believe that at dream’s time, the Barcelona of these years sleeps calmer with their pillow than the Inter.
