Too unexpected semi finals (Yahoo)

If anybody would dare to think about semi finals as that of the World Championship in South Africa, surely he would be declared crazy. And not only due to the teams that play, because three of them (Spain, Germany and Holland) could enter with certainty into the initial calculation, but for those that were eliminated in the quarters, among them Argentina and Brazil.

What until the quarters seemed clearly the great success of South America in this World Championship, with four teams in the quarters (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay Uruguay) there remained only in the hands of the light blues of professor Oscar Tabarez who availed perfectly of the route that the organization generated for the South African team.

The other teams unexpectedly remained on the way, being completely over passed. Brazil played in the first time vs Holland perhaps their best match in the World Cup. It seemed that finally Dunga’s team overcame the pressure to have to reach among the eight first and its players appeared loose, prepared for the so recognized touch of their tradition.

But a fatal error of the very good midfielder, Felipe Melo, allowed the tie of the Dutch and since that moment the Brazilians seemed a lot of nerves, far away of all the effective that they did before and there appeared in good measure Sneijder, and specially Robben physically fresh and uncontrollable for their markers to be in advantage preparing many goal situations, wasted once and again but leaving a feeling of having won amply vs an impotent and nervous rival as it have been rarely seen.

With Brazilian chance out, it was awaited that Argentina should come forward with all the force feeling that one of the great rivals was not any more in the fight, though in front there was Germany, a rival whom Argentina defeated easily in last March in Munich.

But this Germany of Joakim Low has not much to do with hat of three months ago. They play differently, more loose and the exit of Michael Ballack due to injuries, favoured their speed and it is not casual they converted four goals in three matches vs Australia, England and now, Argentina.

It is true that the early goal of Tomas Müller complicated Diego Maradona’s team, but it is also true that Argentina had not played yet against anybody of much valued and always imposed vs weak teams a priori and the big subject was to pass vs a rival of the same stature. It was in this moment when it would be seen for what this group of stars that could not create a collective scheme of quality but was able to define minor battles.

And against Germany they confronted a rival of high weight that could goal more and showed a voluntarily system of players without a scheme that would favour them and with a Lionel Messi pressured to show that actually he is the best in the World. They could not. The press conference of Low when the match was over, was an example of simplicity, because he said what few would dare to do: that the team of Maradona was parted, that there was no midfielder after that strangely Juan Sebastian Veron was put out of the team and bet for two laterals in the middle, as Maxi Rodríguez and particularly Di María. Low said it clearly: “The Argentinean forwards to not like to go back to defend. We observed it and exploited same”, as they also did with the point of the Argentinean defence by the right because it is a place that Maradona had never found a player to occupy it and neither Nicolás Otamendi was able to render.

Paraguay was more dignified, losing in the last ten minutes vs Spain a match that they even were to win, when Cardozo wasted a penalty, but at least resisted against one of the candidates to the trophy, though they suffered the lack of a goal vs the absence of their main forwarder, Salvador Cabañas.

The situation of Uruguay, in change, is the best possible. It is true they found themselves with the best possible calendar obtaining the route of South Africa, but they over passed all the obstacles, specially the last one, very complicated, vs Ghana, when at the final, the hand in the line of their forwarder Luis Suárez converted in heroic because afterwards Ghana Could not convert their penalty.

However, It cannot be said that Uruguay passes only due to the calendar or to bad penalties, but to intelligent job of their coach Tabarez and to a tactic with an important offensive trident (Suárez, Forlán y Cavani) that now will have to change in front of the absence of the attacker of the Ajax.

The moment of the definitions is coming and two interesting matches to be seen. For Germany, as it was difficult for Argentina just in quarters, Spain will be the measure because they were their rivals at the final of European Cup four years ago. For Holland it will be the first time to be the favourite vs Uruguay.

Semi finals unexpected but not less impressive.
